What is a recent prominent event in your life, and how has it affected you?: I have spent a lot of time in Russia in the past year. It is a most edifying experience being around Russians, who, being the most resilient, hardy, strong-willed and independent-minded nation of people I have ever met, enjoy my fullest respect and admiration.
What is the best advice that you give to your children?: To teach them the value of education and learning and always to strive to always want "that little bit more" out of life.
What has produced the biggest impression (shock) on you?: Those of us living in the industrialised world are well versed in how poverty-stricken Third World countries such as India and Africa are. So, therefore, when we visit such countries we are, relatively speaking, not that shocked at what we see: people dying on the streets, people grabbing onto you asking for food, etc.
However, what shocked me most was when I visited several countries in eastern Europe: the level of poverty there was truly terrible and these are European cities. We don't have to visit far away continents to know what poverty is: it is right here on our European doorstep!
The last books that you read?: Anything to do with history and current affairs, but in particular Russian and German history and culture.
